Golden Dogs & Southern Charm: Why SEWE Is a Must for Dog Lovers

A woman wearing a brown wide-brimmed hat, tan sweater, and green plaid blazer kneels next to a happy Golden Retriever at SEWE in Charleston. They are surrounded by event booths and other attendees.

I finally made it back to SEWE in Charleston for the first time in YEARS, and let me tell you—one day was NOT enough. This legendary event is every dog-loving, outdoorsy, wildlife-appreciating, gear-hoarding human’s dream wrapped up in one magical (and muddy) weekend.

Sporting Dogs, Wildlife Art, and Wagging Tails Everywhere

My absolute favorite part? Watching the Sporting Dog demos and browsing all the stunning wildlife art. There's just something so captivating about seeing dogs do what they were bred to do—run, retrieve, and absolutely launch into the water like they’ve been training for this their whole furry lives.

And for the art lovers—wow. From duck decoys to hand-drawn silk scarves, SEWE delivers. It’s like walking through a museum where you can pet the guests and shop the exhibits. A total vibe.

Meet the Makers: Vendors & Brands That Stole My Heart

Let’s talk about some standouts, there’s so many and I just can’t remember at the moment:

  • 🐶 Diamond Bird Dogs: Dylan and his team are the real deal. Friendly, knowledgeable, and passionate about dogs.

  • 🛡️ Gunner: I met their team and was blown away by how chill and genuine they are. Their kennels are next-level.

  • 🧣 Crew LaLa: Eames scored a limited-edition bandana, and honestly? I’m obsessed. Their stuff is timeless with a touch of fun—and they make cute human gear too!

  • 🎯 Killum Calls: Not from the Crystal Coast, but still local-ish (Pamlico Sound & Avon). These handcrafted duck calls are a work of art.

  • 🌊 Swell: Hand-drawn silk scarves that are chef’s kiss beautiful. I may or may not have mentally redecorated my wardrobe around one...

Brittlebanks Park Was The Place to Be

Most of the dog-related action was happening at Brittlebanks Park, and it was absolutely packed (in the best way). I met some folks from Bray Island Plantation—can’t wait to head that way later this year.

Between the dock dogs, the rescues, the trainers, and all the gear vendors, it felt like dog heaven with a side of Southern charm.

A Few Regrets… Like Only Going for a Day

I drove down Friday night to visit friends and their pup, then spent all day Saturday exploring SEWE. But I’ll say it now: this event deserves the whole weekend. I didn’t even make it to the cooking demos (next year, they’re first on the list!).

If you’re planning to go next year, block off all three days. Wear comfy shoes. Bring your camera. And if you’re a dog parent? Prepare to find your people.

Planning Your Own SEWE Weekend?

Whether you’re into bird dogs, art, gear, or just want to meet a community that speaks fluent “sit” and “stay,” SEWE is a must-do. It’s dog-friendly, filled with purpose, and downright inspiring.

Have you been to SEWE before?

📸 Until next year, Charleston. We’ll be back—with more time, more tennis balls, and probably another bandana (or five).
