Honoring Cri: A Celebration of Service, Love, and Family
Some dogs leave paw prints on our hearts, and some leave a legacy. Cri, a retired Marine Corps working dog, was one of those dogs. His Celebration Session at Patsy Pond Nature Trail in the Croatan National Forest was a tribute to his years of service, his unbreakable bond with his family, and the love he carried into retirement.
A Life of Dedication and Loyalty
Cri, short for Criolo, spent his early years serving alongside his handler, Tom, in the Marine Corps. Trained as a multi-purpose K9, Cri was skilled in detecting threats, protecting his team, and completing missions that only the bravest canines could handle. When he retired at six years old, he was lucky enough to stay with his handler and transition into a life of love and companionship with Tom and Carly.
The Session: A Gentle Tribute in the Woods
Despite his warrior past, Cri was always a gentle soul at heart. His session was about capturing the love his family has for him, the pride in his service, and the moments they cherish together.
Even though he was having a “good day,” we took it slow. His body was tired, but his spirit was as strong as ever. The session started with a special tribute: a flag signed by the Marines Cri served with, marking the honor and respect he earned throughout his career. Beside it sat his vest and a knife he received as an award—a reminder of the service and sacrifices he made.
Cri carried one more important item with him that day: his teddy bear. Unlike many working dogs who have a ball or tug as their reward, Cri had a stuffed bear that meant the world to him. Watching him carry it through the woods was a touching contrast to his military past—a sign of the love and softness he embraced in retirement.
A Family's Love, A Lasting Bond
Carly had mentioned that Cri’s dog sister, Bailey, could be a bit shy, but on this day, she was full of life—zooming around and soaking in the fresh air. Cri, on the other hand, wanted to do more, but his body wouldn’t let him. It was heartbreaking to witness, but his family ensured he felt comfortable, loved, and included in every moment.
At one point, as the sun dipped lower in the sky, Cri started to get cold. Without hesitation, Tom wrapped him in his big jacket—a quiet yet powerful moment that symbolized their unwavering bond. Cri had spent his life protecting Tom, and now, in his final chapter, Tom was protecting him.
More Than Just a Dog
Cri wasn’t just a Marine Corps working dog. He was a best friend, a protector, and a beloved family member. His Celebration Session wasn’t just about his service—it was about his heart. About the way he would stand on Carly’s foot so she couldn't move, just to get more scritches. About the way he looked at his parents with complete trust and love. About the legacy he leaves behind, not just in the military but in the hearts of those who loved him most.
As his family prepares to say goodbye, these images will serve as a timeless reminder of the life Cri lived and the love he gave. He was more than a hero. He was theirs.

Cri’s session was held the Saturday before his birthday. He turned 10 on Christmas Eve, surrounded by the love of his family. Just one week later, on New Year’s Eve, he crossed the rainbow bridge. His legacy lives on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. 💙🐾
