Poppy Field Magic: A Spring Session with Joe & Cortado

Spring on the Crystal Coast means one thing—stunning flower fields! Each year, locals eagerly await the return of the vibrant poppies that bloom along Highway 58 before the Emerald Isle bridge. These fields make for breathtaking backdrops, and I was thrilled to photograph two energetic brothers, Joe and Cortado, in this floral wonderland.

Safety First: Why We Keep Leashes On

As dreamy as these open fields look, safety always comes first in my sessions. With a busy highway just feet away, all dogs remain on a leash during photoshoots. I don’t care how well-trained a pup is—if a squirrel or rabbit dashes across the road, instinct can take over. Thanks to a little editing magic, leashes disappear, leaving only picture-perfect portraits of happy pups in the blooms!

A Session Full of Energy (and Treats!)

Joe and Cortado are full of life, adventure, and just the right amount of mischief—but they’re also very treat-motivated! It didn’t take them long to figure out that placing their paws on the log earned them something tasty. Smart boys!

That said, this session wasn’t without its challenges. Tech issues popped up, but I always come prepared with backup equipment to keep the shoot running smoothly. Adaptability is key in outdoor photography, and Joe and Cortado made it easy with their playful energy.

Important PSA: Poppies & Pets

While these fields are undeniably gorgeous, it’s important for dog owners to know that poppies are toxic to dogs if ingested. If your pup has a habit of munching on plants, a poppy field session might not be the best fit. I always keep a close eye to make sure my furry clients stay safe during these shoots.

Looking Ahead to More Flower Field Sessions

Spring flower sessions always feel too short, but they’re one of my favorite seasonal offerings. I can’t wait to be back in the fields next year, capturing more dog-filled floral magic! If you’re dreaming of a session in the blooms, be sure to book early—these short-lived fields don’t last forever!
