Knox’s Fort Macon Adventure: A Giant Pup with a Big Personality!

Meet Knox: A Majestic Great Dane with a Playful Spirit

Knox, a stunning fawn Great Dane, recently had his adventure dog photography session at Fort Macon State Park—one of the best locations for dog-friendly photography in the Crystal Coast.

At just 11 months old and already 120 pounds, Knox is a gentle giant with a heart full of adventure. He’s not just big—he’s also highly trained, having earned his AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) and Novice Trick Dog titles.

Why Fort Macon is Perfect for a Dog Photography Session

Located on Bogue Banks near Atlantic Beach, Fort Macon State Park offers:
✔️ Stunning coastal dunes and maritime forest backdrops
✔️ Wide, sandy beaches perfect for sunset dog portraits
✔️ Dog-friendly trails for adventurous pups

For Knox’s session, we took advantage of the park’s natural beauty to capture a mix of regal and playful shots. Whether posing like a king against the dunes or showing off his goofy side on the beach, Knox made every frame count.

Knox’s Personality: Big, Bold, and Full of Love

Like many Great Danes, Knox is a gentle giant with a thoughtful and reserved nature when meeting new people. When he first arrived at Fort Macon, he was a bit unsure of us and took his time assessing the situation. We gave him plenty of space, allowing him to approach us on his own terms—which took almost 15 minutes.

To make him comfortable, we started with a long lens, ensuring he had the distance he needed to relax. But once he discovered that Charlotte, my assistant, had treats? Game over. Knox was officially ready to make friends!

As we moved toward the beach, his confidence grew, and he was happily trotting through the sand. However, in true Great Dane fashion, he wasn’t entirely convinced that the waves were friendly. With each crash of the surf, he’d take a step back, giving the ocean some serious side-eye.

We wrapped up the session at the bottom of the dunes, where Knox really let loose—rolling gleefully in the sand and giving himself a fabulous new look: "sand beard chic." Let’s just say, that sand wasn’t going anywhere anytime soon!
